Number 3,000: A Moment to Behold
Today was the longest day of my life. My alarm was set for 8am; however, I woke up at 6am to the sound of my dad screaming in bed. At the time of my rude awakening, I was having a horrible dream about someone dying. What a coincidence, right?
So, in a cold sweat, I raced to my parents bedroom only to find my Dad with a jolly smile on his face lying in bed.
In a state of confusion, I asked, "What in the world is going on?"
Both my Mom and Dad just laughed. Although they did seem sort of apologetic, I'm pretty sure they didn't feel too bad considering most people are up by 6am.
As a matter of fact, according to funtrivia.com, "the earliest risers are people in their prime earning years; one-third or more of those aged 30-59 are out of bed by 6 a.m.."
While that stat seems pretty accurate, it sure as heck doesn't include me. I'm a young, ripe-stay-up-all-night college kid.
This was only the beginning of my day though.
From this horrible start, I had to shoot up I-75 to Macon State College to give a presentation of my research paper which covered "Edgar Allan Poe's Conception of the Universe."
Okay, so you don't feel sorry for me yet?
Well, check this out:
Then, I had to wait a very long, excruciating 7 hours for John Smoltz to record his 3,000 strike out. I've been waiting for that moment since this past offseason began.
It's been a long time since I've heard the crowd at Turner Field that loud through the TV. Each time Smoltz had the hitter in a 2 strike count, the crowd began to roar.
When Nationals' Felipe Lopez was found guilty of whiffing on a vintage, Smoltzie Slider, it was definitely a moment this 22 year old Braves fan will never forget.
To be honest with you, I was pretty quiet when it happened because I wanted to take it all in. Sounds kind of stupid, but you just have to understand how much I appreciate this 40 year old Ace who has carried this team for as long as I can remember.
Something else really caught my attention though. Brian McCann, the Atlanta Braves 2-time all star catcher walked the ball back to the mound to embrace Smoltz with a tight bear hug. I couldn't help but get a lump in my throat when I saw this. This 2-time all star catcher grew up idolizing John Smoltz, and for him to be able to catch his 3,000 strike out was another moment to quietly take in.
While the Braves offense didn't give Smoltz the chance to gain the win, the hug he received from his catcher, Brian McCann, was definitely a moment to behold.
John Smoltz, thank you for sharing part of baseball history with us. We're honored.
"For those who have followed my career, know that I've been blessed with a lot of things," Smoltz said. "The Good Lord has taken me through a lot. This is an incredible moment."
